With Medium, Twitter Founders Want to Reimagine Publishing. Again.
The masterminds behind Twitter are introducing a new digital platform that will allow people to publish content without committing to becoming a full-time blogger or maintaining an online audience. Twitter’s new publishing platform, Medium, will look similar to the image-based Pinterest, but its content will feature more than mere photos to include blogs, texts, and video content. Gigaom.com and AllthingsD.com reported on this online publishing project.
Twitter founders, Evan Williams and Biz Stone, pursued this new platform based on their belief that publishing and media are essential to our daily lives. This new platform will provide the publishing tools for people wanting to express themselves through the creation of original content.
Medium won’t be the first or the only collaborative publishing platform. Tumblr offers a similar setup that allows people to post messages or images that are briefer than a blog post, yet lengthier than a tweet. The platform has been extremely popular with millions of creative people. CheckThis and RebelHouse are two other social media platforms that follow the same self-publishing format. All of these platforms offer the privilege of self-expression without the pressure of a personal blog.
Medium will also use basic Web algorithms that elevate the most popular content to the top of the content stream. As a result, the highest-rated posts will appear at the top of the Web page, similar to the way that Google currently ranks its content.
At the moment, Medium is only accepting posts from a select group of invited individuals. After the first of the new year, the publishing platform will become more widely available to the public as our fascination with the creation and distribution of digital content continues to evolve and expand.
