Search Doubled Last Year’s Growth Rate In First Half Of 2011

According to an analysis of revenues generated by the online advertising industry, search engine marketing comprised 49 percent of the spending of any category in the first half of the year, for a total of $7.3 billion spent on search by mid-2011. SearchEngineLand.com reported on these major search results.

“Strong online advertising growth has continued into the first half of 2011,” said David Silverman, a partner at PricewaterhouseCoopers who conducted the analysis with the Interactive Advertising Bureau. “Fueling this growth is the ability of advertisers to correlate performance and results with the dollars they are investing.”

While search accounted for the highest spending overall, display ads garnered 37 percent of the interactive ad spend for this same period of time.

The analysis revealed that search and display each grew approximately 27 percent year-over-year, which indicated that search doubled its rate of growth from the first half of 2010 when it posted only 11.6 percent growth. At this rate, search is positioned to be a major driver of ad revenues for the remainder of the year and beyond.
