Online News Sources More Popular Than Newspapers
For the first time in history, more people get their news from the Internet than from newspapers, according to a recent survey conducted by the Pew Project for Excellence in Journalism. Advertising followed suit with more ad dollars going toward online than traditional sources.
Last year was the first time that online advertising exceeded newspaper advertising. Between 2009 and 2010, the online sector grew 13.9% to reach a $25.8 billion total. Yet not all of that spend went toward online news publications since search advertising continues to command the online ad spend environment.
In addition, online news media was the only medium that saw growth year-over-year. Every other medium saw a decline in audience, including television, radio, newspaper and magazines.
For years, the media industry has been closely watching the Internet’s impact on traditional journalism, from how it’s changing newsrooms to the ways that readers get their news. In response, many news outlets have steadily increased their online and mobile strategies as print sales decline. The recent explosion of tablet and mobile devices has led tablet makers, app makers and news outlets to continue to perfect the news gathering experience on that form, providing additional outlets for online news distribution and turning the page on traditional newspapers.
