NYC Finally Gets the .nyc Domain
Start spreading the news, New York City has finally been approved for the .nyc web domain. Mashable.com reported that city businesses and residents will be able to apply for a .nyc domain later this year. According to Mayor Michael Bloomberg, the new domain will put New York City at the forefront of the digital landscape and bring new opportunities to the city’s small businesses while enabling them to distinguish themselves as part of New York City, which is one of the world’s most prestigious brands.
The city’s bid for the .nyc domain had to be formally approved by the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), which manages the official rollout process of new top-level domains. These new domains are currently in great demand by cities and businesses nationwide. Applicants must pay a one-time fee of $185,000 and additional registration fees, followed by an annual fee to maintain domain control. For New York City, it was a small price to pay to finally gain the .nyc domain that’s become the city’s signature.
